Carry Me Home by Sandra Kring is surprisingly a terrific novel, a real sleeper. I grabbed this book off my mother’s bookshelf for something to pass the time while visiting her home. I have not heard of this author or anything else she has written, but since I will read anything I went ahead and picked it up and before I knew I was devouring every word.

Carry Me Home is set during the 1940’s in a rural Wisconsin town. The main character, Earwig, has a low IQ, but manages fine with the support of his brother. When his brother goes off to war and returns, the whole world of the family is turned upside down; Earwig becomes the support his brother needs to get through this difficult time.

I found this book to be extremely well-written and interesting. It’s not a difficult read; most could finish this book in a few afternoons. Maybe it’s the cover of the book, but it was a great summer read. Not too much thought required, but enjoyable entertainment. This is a warm story with surprising twists and turns! Who doesn’t like a twist in a book?
