Review: Endless Night
Kenn Baker’s Endless Night is not the average vampire book. This is a darkly intense story of lust, greed, violence, and primal urges that refuse be ignored…..and I loved it! Filled with bloody scenes of sex and death, it is a more realistic look into what a world with vampires would be like. You won’t find any love-sick, angst-filled vampires trying to find a way to love a human in this book. In fact, there are very few humans in this book: except for the ones that end up as lunch. When reading most vampire stories, I tend to root for the good guy. But in Endless Night, the good guy is a bad guy. Even though there was a ton of violence in the book, there is humor, too. I found myself laughing when humans were being torn apart, sometimes envisioning the characters dancing and laughing while slaughtering them (Think “A Clockwork Orange” but with vampires!).
Baker’s writing was extremely descriptive, which made the book that much more intense to read. Each and every character adds an extra level to the story with their unique personalities. I’m happy to know that the author is going to add to the series. I’d love to see more from all of the characters and find out where their lives are going to go.
If you’re looking for a sweet romance or a happily-ever-after story with rainbows and flowers, this is not the book for you. While there is humor and a little romance, it’s a dark humor that not everyone will like. If you enjoy a little horror with your vampires, then I say this is a must-read. It really was a fantastic read that fans of gothic vampire romances will like. Endless Night is a delightfully dark walk on the wild side that was impossible to put down.

From the author
James is a vampire who wants to hunt, he relishes the kill. He wants to hunt openly, leaving the dead where they fall, but his pack leader Brad insists upon discretion. James is discontent with this domesticated vampire life, and does everything he can to change his life, fix his relationship, end the tyranny of Brad and avoid that pesky sun.
Endless Night is a fang-filled feeding frenzy of fornication and of course….blood.

They don't have anything to do with Hanukkah per se, but There's Two Of Them, and tonight is the second night of Hanukkah. I am wild with the connections, aren't I?
First: From the charming and clever department, Brian O'Leary's holiday retelling of The Night Before Christmas, only with ebooks.
And Second: This is a cool Kickstarter project: The Monster Alphabet Board Book, created by Darren Gendron and Obsidian Abnormal, the folks behind HelloWithCheese.
Each letter of the alphabet is a different monster – and given how many of you are (a) parents of young kids and (b) total monster geeknerds, I figured you might like to know about it.
For or more, donors get two copies of the book. I'm going to keep one to read to my kids, who will be totally giddy about it, and give one away here once its published. Stay tuned in the new year for funky monster options!
Question: have you ever funded a Kickstarter before? This is my first. It was fun – and very easy!

Books and Booze on Big Night
It’s Big Night out there, folks—if someone’s having a holiday party, there’s a good 90% chance it’s tonight. Great fun taking the train out to wherever you’re going in the evening, seeing everyone all dressed up and eager; much less so coming back after midnight, when one fears for one’s shoes.
In case you have some sense and decide to do your drinking at home tonight with a good book, AbeBooks has some book and booze pairings that go beyond the obvious Hemingway/mojito that they lead off with. If I weren’t out the door I’d be very happy to settle in with a Pisco Sour and a copy of The War of Don Emmanuel’s Nether Parts, or—in the name of locavore reading—The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and a bottle of Ichabod Pumpkin Ale.
Whatever your libation, literary or not, have a safe and happy Big Night.

Review: Angels of the Night: Discovery
Angels of the Night: Discovery is an amazing debut book in the Angels of the Night series. Kennedy draws you in with brilliant characters and the mysterious world of Free Masons and Vampires. The story was intriguing from the very beginning and at no point became predictable. Every time I thought I had it figured out, the author would surprise me with a new twist in the story. Even though this book is tagged as a Young Adult, I wouldn’t suggest it for someone under the age of 17. While there are no completed sexual encounters, there are scenes that get pretty steamy and there are emotional aspects to the story that are more suitable to an adult’s perspective. The conversations and interactions between Allison Webber and the sexy vampire twins, Darcy and Thane Wallace, are a key element and bring you into the story making it easy to put yourself into their shoes. Or maybe that was just me wanting to be in Allison’s shoes.
Angels of the Night will appeal to any vampire romance lover no matter if you normally read in the Adult genre or Young Adult genre. This book will stay with you long after the last page and have you waiting anxiously for the next installment in the Angels of the Night series.

In the U.K. and Ireland they have a marvelous tradition called World Book Day, celebrated this year on March 3. Publishers, schools, libraries, authors, and more all come together to share their love of reading and favorite books, and to get books into the hands of young readers (through £1 book tokens).
However, there is a related event that really gets me most excited: World Book Night. Given the after-hours timeframe, it’s clear that this is an adults-only event, and it involves massively indulgent book giveaways: 40,000 copies each of 25 different titles! That’s one million free books given out over the course of just one night – can you imagine? We would be in a bibliophilic fever. Someone give me a fan, I’m starting to get warm.
Turns out, one of our old Avon A trade paperback authors (now called William Morrow Paperbacks) is featured in the giveaway—Marian Keyes’ Rachel’s Holiday will be handed out in droves all over Ireland and the U.K. tomorrow night. I’ve never read Rachel’s Holiday, but I have read Anybody Out There?, Sushi for Beginners, and This Charming Man. They each made me laugh and cry in just the right proportions, and I loved all of them — I simply couldn’t pick my favorite. That Marian sure has a sassy way of telling a story.
Have any of you read a novel by Marian Keyes? If so, which would you recommend to give away during one night of fevered book giveaways, and why?
In our small nod to World Book Night, we’ll send a free copy of Rachel’s Holiday to the first 10 people to comment!
