Although the title implies that the story line centers solely around a knitting group, The Friday Night Knitting Club delves deep into the lives of the characters. Georgia, the owner of the knit shop, is a single mother of a preteen daughter who is in search of her own identity due to an absent father figure. Her yarn shop, Walker and Daughter, is a shop sought out by serious knitters and beginners alike. A Friday night gathering of knitters starts out disorganized and becomes a regular meeting where the characters can relate to each other in more ways than tips on knitting projects. The story takes an unexpected turn when the father of Georgia’s daughter shows up and wants to be involved in her life again. Georgia struggles to balance between her shop duties, her daughter, a friend found again, and the father of her daughter who is trying to become a part of her life again. There are many unexpected twists and turns in The Friday Night Knitting Club that kept me up to the wee hours of the morning in order to read just one more page.
The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs is a great weekend read. This book does not require much critical thinking while reading and simply falls into the “Chic Lit” nicely. I particularly enjoyed reading The Friday Night Knitting Club because of main character’s relationship with knitting. I too am a knitter, a novice at best, and fell in love with the character’s love for knitting and her knitting shop. Reading this book got me inspired over and over to start new knitting projects and become a member of a knitting community; this connection alone brings the reader to a higher level of investment than the typical Chic Lit.
Overall, this novel is a fabulous book to curl up on the couch with your own knit blanket and cup of tea. I found myself rooting for all the characters, even the ones you’re not sure you’re supposed to like. The Friday Night Knitting Club will make you laugh, cry, and sympathize with each character’s trials and tribulations and make you want to share it with every close girlfriend, knitter or not, so you have someone to talk with about it. I have received three copies thus far from others wanting to share and for this reason I put this novel in the top ten Chic Lit books I have ever read. I cannot wait to read Kate Jacobs’ next work, Comfort Food.
