The Nanny Diaries
Authors Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus
The Nanny Diaries is a fantastic novel about “Nanny” who takes care of a little boy sadly neglected and overlooked by a self-absorbed Upper East Side Manhattan family, the X’s. The book starts out with an incredible interview with a mother who is clearly more interested in her social status and getting the most out her nanny by turning her into a tutor, chef, maid, and subsitute mother. While reading this novel you find your heart going out to the little boy being cared for by Nanny and neglected by his parents, but at times you also feel for Mrs. X, who has her own set of problems.

I absolutely loved this book; being a former nanny in San Francisco, I too have had my share of interviews and temp jobs from the agency I worked for, that closely resembled the families featured in The Nanny Diaries. Fortunately, I was not enough of a glutton for punishment to actually work for a family that treated their children like the X’s on a regular basis. As a shout-out to my former employers, “Thank you for being so incredible!” I do have to say that the ending of this book was perfect, unlike the movie, which changed it to something more “nicey nice.”

Check out the sequel to this book!
